Resumen
Naturally, children are creative, curious and playful. These characteristics are foundational to how young learners engage with the world around them. Playtime for children is very important, and it is not only recreational, but also a vital pedagogical tool that supports emotional, social, cognitive and linguistic development. Through play, children express themselves, solve problems and build relationships. As Whitebread et at. (2017) emphasize, play fosters self-regulation, symbolic thinking, and language acquisition, making it essential to high quality early experiences.
In their daily lives, children are often surrounded by a variety of objects, some are structured, others random and simple. These materials, known as loose parts, include items such as bottle caps, sticks, fabric scraps, and other repurposed materials that can be manipulated, combined and transformed. When integrated into play settings and paired with social interaction, loose parts become powerful tools of learning. Children use them to create, imagine and communicate engaging in open-ended play that promotes autonomy and innovation.
